scope's Review of Mountain Equipment Compressor Pant - Mens

Writing about the men's capri compressor pant that I recently purchased, though I believe the waist and upper leg fit should be the same. I've not used the pant yet, but wanted to give first impressions as there were few reviews and none here. The insulation is really thin. As a result, these pants are extremely light and not bulky, potentially a good thing. But I have my doubts as to how warm they might be.

Another quibble is that for a product that comes S-M-L-XL, there is no waist tie, rather only very soft elastic. I'm a 34 and their size chart says L is 34, but in only underwear, they are barely staying up. I'm sure I could've worn a M. Given how thin they are, I might be more likely to wear these underneath a regular pair of pants so that it wouldn't be much of an issue. OR, as I expected I might do, wear them over hiking pants in camp as I'm not likely to want to change out pants in camp, but rather just supplement what I'm wearing. In that mode, the generous waist probably works well in going over other clothing. Still, not having something to cinch the waist, or at least belt loops, is a pretty major faux pas IMO.

Rating it a 3 and recommending because I do find a 9oz piece of upper leg insulation a potentially valuable product for my use in backpacking, but this isn't the piece of winter gear that I expected it to be.
Pros:
  • Lightweight
Cons:
  • not winter weight
Best Used for:
  • 3 season backpacking
Would Recommend: Yes
