The Outdoor Research Deviator Hoody is ideal for backpacking as a mid layer for me. I wear a light layer underneath and it works perfect. The grid fleece sleeves and back allow for breathing in areas that you tend to sweat at, while the insulated front and wrap around waist keep you warm where you are exposed to the cooler temperature and wind. The hood works well and is a good alternative to a beanie if one is not available.
