CAW's Review of Outdoor Research Helium UL Jacket - Men's
The fabric seems a bit softer to the feel than the previous version. Both the exterior side and the interior side feel softer.The interior laminate on the previous version had a definite plastic look and feel, and got quite worn over time. No extensive use yet on this newer version, but so far it feels more durable.
On the scale, the size Large weighs 5.8 ounces. The center back length is 29.5 inches. The back hen is slightly dropped. The center front zipper is 27.75 inches. The pit to pit measurement is 25.5 inches. The sleeve length from the center back along the top is 38 inches. All this is a perfect fit for my usual size large frame: 41 chest, 35 sleeve, 15.5 neck, 34 waist. This jacket fits smoothly over a base layer and a bulky midweight fleece layer. This is probably adequate for layering for most of the year. The fit is not too loose and not too trim, and it looks good for casual wear.
Mostly, I use it on trail as a layering piece for slight warmth and wind protection more than as a rain jacket. No extensive use in the rain, so I can't judge how it performs long term or in persistent heavy rain. No wetting out in misty rain however.
The chest pocket fits iphone. The hood is the perfect storage for rolling the rest of the jacket into.
Overall, great fit and features for my uses.
