linda b.'s Review of Patagonia Atom Sling Pack

I wanted a sling pack for cycling. It had to have a stabilizing strap, which let out many models on the market. I also did not want anything too large because I didn’t want to cover my back and get sweaty. The Atom is just the right size. It holds my kleen kanteen, my tool bag with tube, pump, and chapman bike mini tools, in the large compartment. My bike lights go inside the inner pockets. The small outer pocket holds my taxi wallet perfectly. My u-lock slips through the adjustable outer tie-down straps. The padding is perfect and it rides weightlessly with the stabilizer strap. Could it be better? Sure. It could go over either shoulder instead of just the right. The zippers could be longer (I think the new model has longer zippers but loses the stabilizer strap). The phone pocket could be just the tiniest bit bigger; my iPhone 5s in case almost zips all the way around but not quite. However, it is quite secure and the zipper does not retract even though it is short of closing by 1/2 inch. I noticed right away that the clip that holds the connector for the stabilizer straps was at risk of coming off so I ran a zip tie through it and around the belt; now it might detach if it gets twisted around but it will not get lost. All those points are pretty minor. The bag has made a huge difference for me when I’m cycling - I used to keep everything on the bike but every time I stopped somewhere I had to spend 5 minutes detaching and shoving stuff in my pockets to avoid theft. Now I stop, lock, and go. I’ll buy another one when this one dies. Or I might buy another soon because they probably won’t make them when I need a new one (that always happens when you find something you like).
