Steve's Review of Rab Ascent 500

As soon as I got it I ran it through the fluff cycle for 20 minutes and then took it outside for about a 2 hour long nap in 35 degree temps in the shade. On a 5.4R Nemo Tensor All Season pad and run of the mill thermal base layer it was nice and warm, soft and fluffy, the zipper ran smooth and it had plenty of room for flopping around and side sleeping. The footbox has enough room to stuff a jacket down there at night.

Compresses well and I haven't seen a single piece of loose down (yet, at least). It also doesn't have any weird down smells, like Sierra Designs down does.

It looks and feels well made all around and I'm very happy with it, but there's a few minor things I don't like:

1. There's no strap to prevent the zipper working down at night.
2. The zippers have metal pulls and only the outer main zipper also has a cord pull.
3. The stash pocket is small and I don't like the placement (above the draft color right at the zipper).
4. Rab says it includes a compression stuff sack. It only has a regular stuff sack.
5. None of this stuff really matters.

It's a great bag and I highly recommend it. If you can get it at the super good Blazin' Deal price like I did you'll be getting an enormous amount of bang for your buck.
Pros:
  • Comfy
  • Quality build
  • warm
  • Reasonbly lightweight
Cons:
  • No zipper strap
  • Small, oddly placed stash pocket
  • Stuff sack only, not compression like Rab says it is
Best Used for:
  • Backpacking
  • Camping
  • Spring and fall temps
