Solid shoe - Salewa Wildfire Gtx Hiking Shoe - Mens

These shoes run a bit narrow in the toe box for a slightly wider than average foot though break in decently with wear and have decent grab (not great on slick, wet sections though not sure if any footwear has been in my experience) I think up-sizing a half size would have a bit of play lengthwise. They have a surprisingly firm footbed considering how thin the sole looks, and they held up great on hard basalt. I didn't wear them under load, though having used comparable shoes that were less firm but more cushy worked in the past, so would these also do the trick on a trek with a mid-sized pack. I also didn't get to wear these on an approach due to going light and having to cross a couple snowfields with an ice axe and crampons before the Class 2-3 scramble. (You could possibly make them work with crampons if the straps were broken in enough and able to attach and grab the harder, reinforced guard on the back of the shoe above the sole (though the face of the sole itself would be a bit soft). I didn't chance it not having time to play around.) These shoes would definitely be more mobile on a Class 3 section than the backpacking boots I have usually worn, though perhaps not as flexible as trail running shoes. It depends on the circumstances and is a personal preference if getting there with more support is more important or more flexibility once you get there. I am looking forward to getting more use out of these shoes.
