Dr. Jon's Review of SHED, Mountain Equipment Havoc Jacket - Men's, Ski Shell Jackets
This review may not apply to the typical customer. The reviewer is a 74 year old retiree who occasionally cross country skis and walks up an easy mountain but has been using mountain equipment for a long time for regular outdoor wear. I am writing this because no one else has and I have few things to share. I like the number of pockets because I keep everything I need to out in the jacket, keys, wallet and keyless automobile starter. When I want to go out I do have to search for this stuff but I simple put on teh coat and go. The clip in the hand warmer pocket (not mentioned in the description is essential and I would have added one if it were not there.
This is very nice jacket and a valid $500 item.
There are several minor issues with this product. There were some aspect about using it that were difficult to learn about. The camp saver live chat was very helpful and is a good last resort. The Mountain Equipment website provides very little support. It may be that they do not have so many customers as ignorant as I.
The hood is designed for a helmet , which I will not likely ever use, unless I take up cold weather bicycling. The front adjust cords do not have clamps on them so the only way to hold and adjustment is tie them together. I added clamps. The trick is that the cord end covers are on two pieces and the end cap can be easily removed. Pry it out, untie the know and it slips off easily. I then added the oval cord stop and replaced the cord end. If you buy one of these at the closeout price it is probably worth doing this mod if are not going to use a helmet and perhaps ever if you do expect to wear one.
Note to Campsaver: I discovered this when I was trying to squeeze the end cap to fit through the clamp and the tip shot off into space and is now gone.
Pros:
Very high qullity
Key Clip in pocket
Great price in close out
two way zipper fo comfort while sitting especially in car
Cons:
Hood adjustment needs clamp
Not much tech support for ignoramuses like me
Best Used for:
back country skiing
Every day winter coat
