DanM's Review of Vivobarefoot Ultra 3 Water Shoes - Mens

I just received these last night. I found them after searching online for articles on the best ultralight camp shoes, and they were very difficult to find online so kudos to Campsaver for carrying them. I am headed to Iceland on a backpacking trip this summer and we will encounter some deep river and tidal crossings, so I wanted a shoe that I could use instead of my boots for river crossings, but could also utilize in camp at the end of the day. So waterproof, lightweight, quick drying, sturdy and comfortable were my criteria for a camp/water shoe, and these are exactly what I was looking for. Completely waterproof except for the cinch string which is quick drying, lightweight (my two shoes, size 42 Euro weigh a combined 400 grams on the dot), and extremely comfortable. I know they will be great for the river crossings, because they are sturdy (unlike crocs). But they will also be great for letting my feet air out in camp after a day of hiking. I normally wear a men’s size 9 – 9.5 US, depending on the shoe. The Euro size 42 version of this shoe is about ½ size too large when I am barefoot, but the cinch pulls it tight to your foot so it does not feel too big at all. Plus, I plan to wear socks with this a lot in camp and when I wear the shoe with socks on the sizing feels just right. If they are as well made as they appear to be, I will be using these for both camping use, and likely everyday use because they are so comfortable, for years to come. Awesome shoe! Oh, I should mention that the shoes that I received look different than the photo online. The shoe has a grey sole (instead of white) and while the cinch strings are the same as the photos online, the cinch pulls are red and blue (vs black online). I am less focused on the look than I am on the utility, but I did want to mention that. I actually think mine look cooler than the white and black ones online, but that is personal preference.
