Richie Booth's Review of Xero Shoes Z-Trek Sandal - Men's
This coming spring(2017) will be my 10 year anniversary of going mostly barefoot. I Am a lead instructor for outdoor programs at the Wilderness Awareness School. I make my own moccasins, and use them when I need a bit of protection. Especially on expeditions where I Am hiking on rough gravely roads. It is these same conditions that tend to wear my moccasins out very quickly. I decided to look into purchasing a minimalist type shoe/sandal, especially for these occasions. I would definitely say that I Am very picky when it comes to footwear! I have been using the Z-Trek Sport Sandals and love them!
They are really light weight and easy to carry, even in my pockets if need be. I tend to run/walk toe-heel(like most plantigrade animals, as we humans are), instead of heel-toe(like the modern human). Wearing shoes often restricts this and makes it feel awkward. Running and walking toe-heel is still easy to do with the Xero Shoe. I can feel the ground enough that it still allows me to be light footed, but also gives me a great deal of protection. I was concerned about rocks and debris getting in the sandal when I run, but that isn't much of a problem. I can run in them very easily. I also do a fair bit of stalking or slow stealthy type movement. Feeling the ground is key. While they aren't as soft as a moccasin, I can still stalk in them much easier than in a normal shoe or boot. The one area that I can't speak to I feel like has already been tested and proven. That is the durability. I likely will never get to 5k miles, as I so often go barefoot.
For anyone that really likes going barefoot, but needs some added protection from time to time, or for anyone just looking for a good overall sandal. I highly recommend these shoes. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because my ultimate sandal would be a bit softer so I could feel the ground more. I didn't really expect that though, due to the really high durability they have.
