Static vs Dynamic Rope: Static rope, aka low elongation rope, has much less stretch than dynamic ropes. It has specific applications where it is safer and outperforms dynamic rope, read on to learn more about that. Here at CampSaver, we carry a wide variety of static rope from the most popular brands!image

What is a static rope used for?

Since it usually has less than 5% elasticity, static climbing rope is ideal for rappelling, hauling gear when climbing, caving, and rescue work. This is because of having too much dynamism (stretchiness) during certain climbing applications for safety reasons. Too much bounce can lead to unsafe conditions and make it difficult to perform various tasks. Where a dynamic rope is good for ascending because it reduces the shock of a slip when the rope quickly takes your body weight on an anchor point, you would not want to use a static rope because you don't have that bounce and your body will take the unmitigated force of the fall, which is both painful and puts you at high risk for injury.

How strong is static rope?

When used properly, static ropes are very strong. They can vary, so you'll want to be sure to check the load limit before using one. The biggest concern, as mentioned above, is using one where you may fall downwards while ascending on a climb. Static ropes are not designed to take the increased force (kN = kiloNewtons) inherent to falling weight, and this kind of misuse can reduce the overall strength of a static rope.

Can you rappel on static rope?

Absolutely! Many climbers prefer to rappel using static ropes to reduce the bouncy effect of descent. A dynamic rope will work for rappelling, and of course, some prefer them. Static climbing ropes are particularly nice when free rappelling and you won't be in contact with a wall or other surface (picture commandos dropping from a helicopter) because when you slow or stop your descent there is no bounce to make you sway back and forth.
