Description

The Mont Bell Alpine Light Down Parka gets roughly 10% lighter and softer without sacrificing durability! Functional mid-layer's flaunt characteristics essential for comfortable backcountry activity: optimized warmth to weight ratio and exceptional compressibility. The secret to the warmth of these garments not only relies on the high lofting 800 fill power goose down, but the inherent wind shedding ability of the silky 20-denier Ballistic Nylon shell. By blocking a large percentage of wind, a relatively light layer conserves the heat your body is naturally producing. Designing outdoor clothing with warmth to weight ratio in mind is great, but we also like to think the Alpine Light pieces succeed when it comes to warmth to dollar ratio.

Comments about Alpine Light Down Parka - Women's:

I have only had this hoodie a few weeks but the weather has been extremely cold, so I feel able to comment. At first I was thinking that I had made a mistake and it was not going to stand up to a Northern Utah winter. Wearing it indoors, I didn't think it was that warm. But then I wore it outside over a T-shirt and thin fleece to walk a couple of miles in single digit temps. I wasn't glowing with toasty warmth, but I was "just right" comfortable, and able to relax while walking. I felt extremely light and free of bulk. I've been out walking in it daily since then with temps mostly in the teens, always with the same result. Light layers underneath, it works for me, in bitter cold, light snow, wind, whatever.

I sized up and the cut of this jacket is roomy enough to accommodate under-layers. It is un-puffy enough not to feel like Michelin Woman. It's thin enough to be a mid-layer. I like the generous shoulder cut, unfussy cuffs, inside drop-in pockets, and compressibility. Great hood - it moves with you.

Tiny gripes are that the outside pocket zips are stiff and need two hands to open and close. An inside chest pocket with a zip would be nice, too.

Comments about Alpine Light Down Parka - Women's:

I love this jacket! Perfect for backpacking or hiking as it weighs nothing and packs small. It is also very comfortable and looks nice. Not sure it would be warm enough for very cold weather but great for summers in the mountains at night. I also like that it has a hood and is slightly longer than similar jackets.

Comments about Alpine Light Down Parka - Women's:

The zipper is very difficult to close - can't imagine getting it done with freezing fingers. The green color is NOT what the picture showed but a very bright grass green, not too bad if you only use it as a backpacking midlayer, but it cuts down on versatility (wouldn't want to use it off the mountain). Compared to the Montbell down inner jacket it's much stiffer (30 dernier versus 15) but not truly sturdy, less compressible and it weighs slightly more. The hood doesn't have draw strings to tighten it. I doubt it would stay on in windy conditions. According to the Montbell sizing chart I would have needed and XL (normally I'm between an M and an L. Ordered the L and had plenty of room for layering. I meant to use the jacket for layering, but am not convinced at all that it would be warm enough in spite of the 800 fill (wanted it for high altitude hiking), just not enough fill weight. Bottom line: a great lightweight jacket, but doesn't work for what I wanted. Will return this item.
