What is a lumbar pack?

A lumbar pack is sometimes referred to as a "fanny pack," but there are several key differences between these waist packs. Both are worn around the waist but a fanny pack tends to be pretty small and light, worn slung lower on the hips, and more appropriate for carrying wallets and small travel accessories like sunglasses and lip balm. A lumbar pack is more robust and designed as an alternative to a traditional "day pack" backpack. They allow for freer movement and, when worn properly, distribute the weight onto your hips. A lumbar pack is designed to be worn snugly around the hips to properly distribute weight and provide all-day comfort. They are usually worn on the back instead of front because they're larger than fanny packs and aren't easy to move with when they're under your belly instead of over your fanny. Once you have one loaded up and strapped around you, you'll be able to adjust it slightly higher or lower to find your own sweet spot. As another benefit, they're very easy to adjust when you're on the go and on the trail. A quick pause, cinch or loosening of the belt, and you're on your merry way again. Sometimes people will wear them slung over the shoulder and across the chest like a sling pack for quick and easy access, but this is usually short-term and more common in urban settings.
