I have an earlier Black Diamond Z (Ultra Mountain Carbon) trekking pole (probably five years old). The new version I recently purchased (Distance Carbon Z) is truly remarkable. These poles are lighter and easier to use than expected. The grips are very comfortable. My only concerns are the durability of the carbon and also the durability of the straps. The straps appear to be easy to field repair, however. I'm very happy with the initial inspection, but will owe another review after I test them for a few days on the AT.

Aluminum or duralumin is heavy, so I didn't take it with me when I went to a low mountain. Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z Trekking Poles is very light! It's so nice because it's three-step controlled and portable. I always carry it around and go hiking. The design is pretty, too. I recommend it!

Once you have inserted the pole sections together, grab the foam handle in one hand and the carbon section right under the handle with the other hand. You should be able to pull these section apart until they click into place. This will prevent the sections from coming apart.
