Rubs on ankle bone

The shoes seem like they have potential but don't work for me. They rub on my outer ankle bone. I bought these shoes 1/2 size bigger than normal to avoid damaging my toe nails. Perhaps they would work better if I cut out the sides around my ankle.

I run 4-5 times a week totaling about 30 miles, 1-2 times on trails. This is my first pair of Hoka One One shoes, and I can understand the praise they get. They are super-comfortable, grippy, and stable. On smooth downhills they let me relax more while maintaining control, and thus recover better.
