Rubs on ankle bone - Hoka Mafate Speed Trail Running Shoe - Mens

The shoes seem like they have potential but don't work for me. They rub on my outer ankle bone. I bought these shoes 1/2 size bigger than normal to avoid damaging my toe nails. Perhaps they would work better if I cut out the sides around my ankle.
