This is my 2nd Whisperlite. I bought my first one 12 to 15 years ago and abused it as I do all my gear. I never did any maintenance on the stove...never had to. Finally it started leaking where the stove hose and plunger meet. I think it was just an O-ring, but for insurance, bought a new one. I will fix later, and have a standby when I need two stoves going at once. As far as ... Read more

I think this is a great stove but it's not really for me. I think the problem is that it is a liquid fuel stove. I have been spoiled by the ease and size of the canister stoves. Once I get it going it performs great but getting it lighted is the frustrating part. I would recommend this if someone knows they want a liquid fuel stove.

I do a fair amount of backpacking but am not a technology type person, don't like fiddling with stuff--this stove is fairly easy to use and lasts forever---I had one for over 20 years that was taken by a bear last month--so bought a new one.
The only reason I gave it poor marks on temperature control is that there really isn't any--it's either on or off. If you want to be slow... Read more
I have owned and used my Whisperlite stove on hiking and backpacking trips for over 15 years. With the maintainance kit, the stove and pump can be practically rebuilt as needed to keep them working great. It boils water like nobody's business. Simmering can be done, but the stove has to be adjusted constantly and cleaned to prevent the jet from becoming blocked. The base doesn'... Read more
My dad has used an older whisper lite for about 15 years now and we have never had a problem, so it was a no brainer that when I began taking my own groups without him I would get the whisper lite. We fry trout in the cohutta wilderness of north ga and it does great. It does get a little hot in the middle of the pan, but if you pay attention its not a problem. Highly recommend.
Was looking for a backbacking stove and decided to get a liquid one for versatility in fuels. Check out the international version too. Not as simple as turning a valve and pushing a button, but I bought it for fuel options and longevity. Used a dozen times so far and works good if you follow start up procedure.
