A mummy bag minimizes open space in the bag which minimizes cold spots. If you expect to sleep in colder temperatures, you'll want to consider using a mummy. Most of them cinch around your face in order to keep the heat inside as well. Rectangular bags are generally rated for higher temperatures and summer camping where nights aren't as cold.
