Carbon replacement granules are used to remove herbicides and pesticides as well as flavors that may be present in the water. The ceramic portions actually function as the portion that filters out bacteria and protozoa (and sometimes viruses depending on the micron level). The Katadyn Vario uses carbon granules and a ceramic filter.

The ceramic replacement filter from Katadyn filters 14,000 gallons of water. The ceramic element is washable. There are carbon granule replacement filters that you remove from the element and replace. With this system, there's less waste heading to the landfill.
