i see a more expensive locking biner on other websites called the mad rock ultra-tech HMS...what are the major diference and what does the HMS mean? the HMS weighs a bit more and costs more yet seems to be the same thing — 1 Answer

The HMS means that it's compatible with a Munter hitch. They have to make the carabiner more round to do this, which generally adds weight. The carabiners labeled HMS are generally better to use with a belay device than the non-HMS ones due to the shape. Alternately, non-HMS are better for lightweight locking biners for general use.
