How does it self-inflate and how many times can you inflate it.

Prolites are manufactured with some compressible foam on the inside. If you open the valve, the foam will decompress and self inflate the pad to a point. You will need to inflate beyond that in order to get a more rigid shape. The pad can be inflated and deflated hundreds, probably thousands of times.
