BenW's Review of ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 4 Person Tent
I bought this tent for a 5 night Boundary Waters trip with my family of five. I didn’t want to spend big bucks since my family is growing and we might not fit the tent in a year. Also, it seemed to check all the boxes, aluminum poles, double doors and vestibules, great footprint size and around 8lbs. We have three young girls and my wife and I I didn’t plan to buy a tent but needed to after pulling out a big name high dollar tent from storage and learning that the fly was severely deteriorating. The plan was to buy a four person tent so that it would fit on the tent pads in the Boundary Waters. Generally speaking a four person tent is about the maximum size that will fit in almost every site. We had no problem fitting all five in this tent. I would say it’s fairly large for a four person so the size was perfect and the double doors were ideal for our family. The materials seem strong and had good water resistance in the rain. The zippers on both the fly and the tent body were very smooth and at 150 bucks on sale it seemed like I should at least give it a try. Now for the bad. I have never owned a tent with such poor ventilation. There needs to be a lot more mesh on the tent body. On hot nights with a breeze the tent stayed hot even after the outside temperature dropped significantly. I’ve never experienced this in any of my other big name tents. The upper ridge vents tend to blow open in blowing rain. They could use extra Velcro to hold them down during storms. Also, I needed to seem seal the zipper seams as they were not taped. I really wanted to love this tent but I just can’t. But at a third of the cost of my other tents it served its purpose for this trip. This will be its last trip as I’ll be putting this one on marketplace. I think this tent would work well for a person that is willing to sacrifice ventilation and maybe doesn’t plan to camp on the hottest summer nights. It really is a reasonable tent, especially at the price. It’s just not for me.
