Interesting shoe, just a role player IMO

by 6shooter, from AZ, United States Written on September 28, 2021
I day hike nearly every day, maybe 350 days a year, mostly in dry desert weather, technical, rocky, and steep hikes. I do a little trail running, but not as much.

I know several hiking buds who love Altras, and several who hate them, seems few in-between, but thought they were worth a try.

On the upside, grippy sole, light, breaths well, all good. On the downside, very little lateral support for ankle rolls, etc, overly wide toebox and laces do not go very far up, so no way to tighten. My feet are not narrow, they are average width, and I slide around inside these shoes. The midsole is very soft & spongy, you feel every rock, but they don't hurt, so the plate is doing it's job. Not good at water repelling, but dries quickly. Guessing from materials will not last long, but just got them, so don't know longevity yet.

For me, they are very comfy and light and breathable, feel like a slipper, but for technical steep hikes, or even trail running, I need more support and durability, and a better fit.
Pros:
  • Light, Grippy, Breathable
Cons:
  • Poor fit, no lateral support, low durability
Would recommend: No

Great Trail shoe

by Maineiac, from ME, United States Written on May 31, 2021
Great comfortable trail shoes that I’m hoping has an equal longevity. I’ve had this shoe in for a little over a week now. They are very similar to a barefoot Merrill that I own, but has a much more stable tread and midsole for the trail. 5 stars so far!
Pros:
  • Breathability
  • Wide toe box
Cons:
  • NONE
Best Used for:
  • Trail, hiking, long miles
Would recommend: Yes

Very Comfortable Trail Runner

by Fl hiker, from FL, United States Written on April 7, 2021
1st impression is like walking on a cloud they are so comfortable. With being flat footed they do have a arch. Break them in before tackling a trail. I laced up my shoes tight and that help with the arch support no being so bad. There is plenty of room for your toes. A lot of people say order a 1/2 size bigger but I would have to disagree. The do kick up a lot of dirt and rocks when hiking so I suggest wearing them with gaiters.
Pros:
  • Super Comfortable
Cons:
  • High arch
Best Used for:
  • HIKING
