Robert's Review of Altra Arrows Superior 3.5 - Men's

This review is based off what Altra's Features they offer on their website.

Footshape Toe Box - They claim that the toes are able to relax and spread out naturally to maximize stability and power. I'd say that from running in these shoes I would agree. I think that their toe box allows for a more natural running experience. My toes never fill confined, and able to stay relaxed or a smooth foot placement. This feature is awesome when it comes to doing ultra runs.
Grade: A+
Zero Drop Platform- Claim is the heel and forefoot are the same distance from the ground for a natural alignment and low-impact. I support this claim. Having an even distance between foot and heel is a great feature because it is my foot, legs, glutes that is doing the work. Some shoes with that do not have the zero drop give me a bumbling feeling when running on trails. The same can be said about my impact. Because of the zero drop I don't have a false sense of how my feet are impacting the ground- giving me true feedback.
Grade: A+

Gaiter Trap- A system to hook gaiters to shoes to prevent dirt and debris out. I've personally never used this so I can't give any opinion on them.

Guratread- Claim to the outsole rubber will last long and offer great grip on both tame and technical terrain. I'm not sure that I'd agree with this. Altra lacks the durability that other shoes offer and the shoes do not hold up well in technical terrain. However, they do have a longer life if the shoes are kept on a "tame" trail with not many obstacles to go over.
Grade: C

StoneGuard: Claims to offer flexible protection from rugged terrain by deflecting rocks into the midsole for smooth running. Not sure how this works, and I'd love the technology explained to me how this works. I personally feel like the stoneguard may work for a hundred miles on the shoe, but once it hits that threshold I could feel almost every rock my foot landed on. Which became really uncomfortable after running long distances.
Grade: C

Trail Claw: Lugs that are strategically placed beneath the metatarsals to provide traction at toe off. The lugs have been great on my uphills. Granite that no shoe is perfect, I do slip from time to time, mostly on really loose rocks, and on adventure runs where the trail is very faint. However, on well maintained trails they've never given me a problem.
Grade: B

The shoes work well on wet terrain, I haven't slipped on any wet rocks or dirt. However, since they are a breathable shoe they will soak up water fairly quick.

For those who want a shoe that does well on maintained trails that don't offer too much technical difficulty these are the shoes. Also, they are great for those who want a shoe that will mostly stay out of the way of how the foot falls because of the technology they have put into the zero drop and toe box. I'd give these an over all of 4 stars because I think Altra has found their place in the industry that offers the best shoe for natural minimalist running that others haven't really seemed to tap into. Every update in their shoe has pushed them in a more positive direction, but the only thing I personally feel like they need to work on is their durability. I seem to burn through their shoes more than any trail shoe I've had.

Good luck and happy trail running!
