First time Altra wearer, who is now converted from Salomon speedcross

I recently took part in a 24hr lapped trail running event. Having run for a number of years in Salomon speed cross shoes I was wanting to try something a bit more specialist away from the mainstream trail shoes. The issue I was having with Salomon is basically they fall too apart after a few runs. At the event there was a number of stalls selling running gear (appropriate at a running event) I saw a pair off Altra superior trainers at a reduced price and decided on an impulse buy. The idea of zero drop appeals to me. Feeling the ground with its twists and turns whilst on the trails is a big thing as foot placement is important to reduce the Risk of turning an ankle. As you know when your foot hits the ground the toes don’t stay together in a row but instead they splay out, the extremely wide toe box on the Altras accommodates this with a really wide toe box. Wearing these for the first leg of the event maybe wasn’t the wisest idea being brand new. After 2/3 miles in the weather turned to torrential rain and made the trails a sloppy mud filled mess. The shoes held fast and I didn’t miss a step. They are a light weight sturdy well constructed shoe. Have I been convinced that these will deal with all trail situations?? Yes I think the will. Time for the Salomons to visit the bin.
Pros:
  • Light weight, grippy and zero drop
Cons:
  • None

  • trails
