mehcaver's Review of Aquamira Water Treatment
I've used Aquamira as a replacement for water filters in wilderness areas far from human habitation. I don't know if I would trust them in those "it's not safe to drink the water" patches in the biosphere. Chlorine dioxide is indeed inimical to all manner of life forms. It requires a bit of patience to use it. Two solutions must be mixed in a small cap and allowed to react (5 mins?) with each other. When the reaction is complete, the mixture turns yellow, so you have a clear signal that the chemicals are still reactive. After adding the chemicals you must wait (15 mins?) for them to do their job. Initially, the water will have a slight chlorine taste. However, if you allow the water to 'breathe' for a few hours, the chlorine dioxide gas will evaporate and your water will lose that chemical taste. CAVEAT EMPTOR! The claims you read here and on the product are kinda dodgy. If you read the description carefully, you will find no claim that Aquamira actually KILLS anything. It's 'effective', and it can be used to 'preserve' stored water, they say. No claims like 'kills 99.999% of" whatever can be found anywhere. Why does the manufacturer shy away from commitments? Makes me nervous, so I only use it under some conditions.
