Wutz's Review of Big Agnes Bunk House 4 Tent

Reason for purchase: standing height. Versatility of shelter mode vs full tent with rainfly and option of canopy for sun protection. Wanted a 2-3P tent but no 2-3P tents exist with standing height. Be careful as dimensions given for footprint is tent only. Vestibule will take more space and this tent may not fit on a small tent site. It was very spacious for one cot and one mattress in either side with bags of clothes at end of “bed” and middle open for standing/walking/ changing clothes. Would be good for three mattresses. Tent held up in strong winds at beach. We used heavy duty sand stakes. It was very humid and condensation on outside as well as inside the tent when fly is closed. Tent has no vent on top which I think it should have two. Especially when it’s colder and you want to close doors. With open doors ventilation was good. Gear pockets are nice. Also you can string a guy line from ceiling to hang stuff. The vestibule sides need another loop in middle bottom for stake. Wind ripped side out of stake and strong winds kept it billowing. It was hard to keep it secured. The back door can be opened. However it needs another loop tie to keep it tucked away. Again strong winds being the issue. Storing it back in backpack style bag was ok. Bag was much bigger than when factory packed. Why is there no bag for the stakes? I was able to set up by myself (5”4’ female) in about 45 min. Better to do it with another person. Would be incredible if one could use the shelter mode and assemble / disassemble tent from under it. But can’t do due to sleeves the poles have to go. The canopy can be staked out with two tarp poles. I didn’t buy the footprint but used Tyvek. Big mistake. It’s so noisy. It didn’t rain so can’t attest to waterproof or not. Hope to update it once I use it in more inclement weather. I also own the Cooper Spur 2P HV earlier model. Big Agnes makes great functional tents.
