Believe it or not, I own three Copper spur tents - the UL1, UL2 and UL3 — and plan to purchase the UL4. Obviously I love the Copper Spur tents, otherwise I would not keep buying them!
All of the Copper Spur tents are absolutely first-rate in terms of the quality of design and construction. They have fantastic ventilation, keep you dry even in very difficult conditions, and can withstand high winds better than almost any other tent. The lightweight material that the tents are made of looks flimsy, but it really isn’t. I have two young boys and the tents have endured roughhousing, shoes worn in the tent, etc. We use a footprint but I would feel OK if we didn’t use one, although it’s hard to imagine why anyone would retain from using a footprint. In general, the tents’ design, construction, and materials are all top quality.
The only downsides of the UL2 is (1) the inner doors open down onto the floor as opposed to opening to the side — have never understood why Big Agnes does this, but it’s obviously a deliberate decision as the doors have opened down for several years; and (2) for every Copper Spur tent except the UL1, the size estimates are exaggerated. All modern tent manufacturers are overly optimistic when it comes to size and Big Agnes is no exception. The UL2 is a really tight fit for two adults, really tight. When I was growing up in the 1980’s, tent size estimates were overly pessimistic, you could easily fit thee people in a 2 person tent. Times have changed, significantly, and that is no longer possible.
Also, the tent is tapered; one end of the tent, the end where your feet are supposed to go, is significantly narrower than the other end. I have a medium wide sleeping mat and I am not sure that its possible to fit two of them into the tent without a little bit of overlap, although I haven’t tried that so I don’t know for sure. But this tent is a tight fit for two people, it’s luxurious for a single person and only weighs a few ounces more than the UL1.
In all these are fantastic tents, well worth the money, and the quality is absolutely top notch. But be aware that for each model except the UL1, it’s a tight fit; for comfort it’s best to sleep one less person than the tent’s theoretical maximum capacity.
