JMT Old Timer's Review of Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Tent - 2 Person, 3 Season
It’s all about the weight in backpacking and short of taking just a tarp or cowboying, this tent is very light and reasonably easy to set up. With two people sharing, one can carry the tent and fly and the other the poles and stakes. For one person carrying, it’s a bit bulkier to pack but still very light. After you’ve set it up the first time it’s pretty easy going forward. Takes a little longer to set up than I’d like but it benefits from staking our all the tie downs for the fly, though the tent itself is free standing. The stakes that come with it are too short to be useful in windy conditions, especially for the fly. They lack a sufficient hook on the end so I’ve replaced them with after market stakes that are longer and are hooked on the end to hold the tent straps down. It’s a tight squeeze for two plus packs inside but in good weather the vestibules created by staking out the fly on both sides - there are zippered doors on both sides of the tent - provide space for packs and boots. It is not sold with a footprint which I bought separately and is a must both for more insulation and floor protection. This tent is great for one person with plenty of space for pad, sleeping bag and pack. There are plenty of overhead pockets in the ceiling to store all manner of stuff plus many small ties to use for hanging things like a lightweight solar powered lantern. All in all a great tent from BA.
Pros:
Very lightweight
well designed by pros
good for backpacking
Lots of overhead storage
Cons:
Stakes too short and lack sufficient hooks on ends to hold down tent tie downs
Expensive but you get what you pay for in gear
Footprint must be bought separately and is a must
Best Used for:
Backpacking and through hiking
