DadOfThree's Review of Big Agnes Deer Park 30 Sleeping Bag (600 down)
I bought this bag because after seeing it in a store and doing lots of research I felt it would be a good choice. I like how BA does not put any insulation under this bag, you will need a pad 25"Wx78"L. I believe it will support up to a 4" thick pad. I use a Q-Core SLX and it is VERY comfortable. I have never slept this well camping ever. Since there is no down on the bottom it is all above you where it can actually do some good. When down is compressed it looses much of its insulating capability. The baffles are sewn more closely together than others so it keeps the down in a smaller area to do its job. Now for the good part, the bag is BIG. Which is perfect for me. I am 6'2" have a girth of 77" and weigh 400#. I have plenty of room as a side sleeper and with the above mentioned pad I have never had a situation where my hips hit the ground.
I had also purchased a Sea-to-Summit Basecamp bag which was also larger sized. They were both rated for nearly the same temp but the BA bag felt much more lofty than the STS. I also didn't like how the STS had much wider baffles which you could literally see through and had insulation that was underneath you, compressed and doing little to provide warmth. This bag was also considerably more expensive and when coupled with a pad represented a significant investment. I elected to return the STS and use the difference on updating other pieces of gear.
A couple notes about the BA bag to take note of. It does have zippers on each side which I do like for ventilation. If you don't like dual zippers look at the the Fish Hawk 30º bag they make one with a single zipper and sized the same as the Deer Park 30º. It also has a nice area to stuff a fleece or inflatable pillow. I should also mention that the full length sleeve is also attached to the bag so the pad and bag stay together and you don't have to worry about becoming separated from your pad.
This is an excellent high quality bag that provides an outstanding value. I would not hesitate to recommend this bag to anyone. The Park Series bags by Big Agnes are just the ticket for us larger adventures. I plan on purchasing a 0º bag to cover my cold weather excursions.
