One of the best camping purchases we have ever made! I am absolutely blown away by this bag, and my partner (who is 6'2") loves it as well, especially that he can fit in it from head to toe!
We have only used this bag once so far, and took it out camping in Southern Ontario in March of this year, when there was still snow on the ground and ice on the trees. It dipped to about -7C (19F) at night and I was toasty warm. We used Thermarest pads (R4.9) and some good ol' blue foam under that in our 3 season tent. For added reassurance we wore two layers of clothes to bed (merino wool and fleece) and used a thin bag liner under the quilt- there are even liner loops in the bag, which helped to prevent any cover stealing that may have happened otherwise.
There is a ton of loft and the bag is probably about the size of a double bed in width- but lays out flat (almost tightly) when the sleeping pads are slid in the sleeves. No chance of rolling off your pad though, which is amazing! I toss and turn at night and this was a great bag that allowed me to do so without getting cold. The only time I did get cold was when my partner got up in the night, and his side of the bag filled with cold air upon exiting. We forgot to properly vent our tent on the first night and woke up with condensation all over our bag- but the waterproof fabric and the DownTek held strong and there was no loss of loft or warmth.
The only down side to this bag is the lack of any real insulation underneath you. We have talked about getting a soft liner to put under us, or using one of our older synthetic bags for more insulation. This would really defeat the purpose of this bag’s appeal, as the King Solomon compresses right down into a 20L compression sack, taking up the same space (if not less) than one of our old single synthetic bags. This is why I’ve only given it 4 stars. I think the bottom sleeves could have been better designed as well, it definitely takes a few extra minutes to feed each sleeping pad in individually. Sierra Designs just has slide-in sleeves on the top and bottom of their bags (not the whole bag length as on this one), and I think is a better design.
Ultimately, the King Solomon is a very fitting name, as it will truly make you feel like a king, or queen, in this bag. Can’t wait to try it out when the weather is a bit warmer!
Shipping was fast (took exactly a week to arrive in Toronto, Canada) and so efficient. Customs was also not too expensive, much cheaper than I'd anticipated.
