CSJ's Review of Big Agnes King Solomon 15 Double Bag -600 DownTek-
First, calling this item a "sleeping bag" is misnomer. BA calls it a "System bag" and many hikers call this type of bag a "quilt". There is absolutely no fill in the bottom half; only fabric. This website didn't clarify that point, and I was quite ticked off when I opened the box.
To clarify, you absolutely MUST use sleeping pads with this "system bag", or you will be sleeping on the ground. The sleeve on the back can hold two 20x72" sleeping pads or, if you can find one, a 40x72. Big Agnes seems to have 1 in that large size, but so far, I've not found any other companies that have them.
Next...there's no way that this is a 15F bag. 40F is comfortable, but freezing? Below freezing?! Ludicrous! After receiving this item, I started looking online for opinions about Big Agnes temp. ratings on forums -- as opposed to pages like this that actually sell gear. Apparently, Big Agnes is well known for overstating their temp. ratings by about 15 degrees. Who knew?
Next, you have to be really tender when using the zipper on this thing. The material is exceptionally soft and gets caught in the zipper very easily. This isn't a Coleman product that you can be rough with.
Also, the bag is pretty small. I'm 6' and 210lbs. My wife is 100lbs. We fit, okay, but I can't imagine 2 average sized Americans fitting in this. This is made for dainty couples or camping gear models. The bag covers my shoulders, but my feet are at the bottom of the bag. If you are over 6 feet, look for a different bag.
With this type of bag especially, remember to bring a patching kit for the sleeping pad in case of leaks!
Pros:
packs small
Cons:
Temp rating inappropriate
Best Used for:
Late Spring, Early Fall.
