I bought this for my 5 year old son, who I just introduced to climbing but who didn't want to borrow his sisters' bags. This bag a good size for his hands as he doesn't need much dexterity to get his hands into the opening (i.e. one less thing for him to worry about when learning how to climb). It's larger size also means that it will "grow" with him. To compare, his sisters have a different brand, and their hands at age ~10 years are getting a little crowded for their bag. This will become a limiting factor soon when they can't access chalk while clinging to the wall; adult sized bags are still way too large for their hands.
As strong as the Metolius Element along the major axis (24kN), but lighter in weight. However, the Metolius Element has more metal (therefore greater diameter by 2.5 mm), giving a smoother and broader contact surface for rope.
My kids are 7 and 8 years old. Petzl has made a very sturdy yet comfortable and adjustable harness for kids. I had been looking at cheaper harnesses that they could outgrow and retire, but I'm glad I paid a little more and got these instead. These harnesses fit them perfectly with plenty of room to grow for many more years to come, especially since they are average sized. Unlike some competitors models, the Petzl Macchu has two waist adjustment buckles, which allows for better centering of the entire harness and better fit/comfort.
