Buy them now!

Written on Aug 08, 2018

I wore out a pair of Speedcross 3's over the course of about 4 years and have upgraded to the 4's. I run in them, mountain bike in them, hike in them and backpack in them. They were the first pair of trail runners I ever bought and I expect they are the only kind I'll ever buy. I LOVE how comfortable they are. I have a wide foot and even with the medium width these feel amazing. They just cradle your foot so well. They get wet super fast even from a few steps in wet grass, but they're so airy and dry incredibly fast so it's more than worth it. Tread is killer, they love soft trails and muddy conditions. I like the speed laces, and never have I noticed them loosen up on me. The lace pocket on the 3's was more user-friendly than the 4's because the tongue on the shoe was a lot bigger. The 4's are slightly more of a pain to stow the laces on but it's still a great design I think. I got my wife hooked on them as well just recently and ordered her a pair of the climashield 4's today, I'm curious to see how those work out. Might invest in a pair for myself since cooler weather is coming soon. Great shoes!

Better hiking shoe than approach shoe

Written on Aug 08, 2018

I bought these as my first pair of approach shoes knowing nothing about what an approach shoe really had to do. I was just told I needed approach shoes for an upcoming trip. Well for what the trip was (alpine climbing in the Tetons) they worked fairly well. Lots of mileage and not much actual climbing while wearing them. But as soon as we started doing some more traditional climbing with legitimate technical approaches and descents, I quickly realized they weren't the best choice. In my opinion, these are much more geared towards non-technical hiking-type approaches. I found that for actual climbing the sole has too much tread that mushes around underfoot and the way it hangs out on all sides makes edging difficult since it just wants to flex out of the way. And they definitely do run a bit small. They pinch my forefoot bad enough that its hard to wear them all day. Definitely want to size up half to one size. A very sturdy shoe though, the quality is evident. I wear FiveTen Guide Tennies now and feel that they're a much better technical shoe without sacrificing on comfort.

Great Jacket

Written on Mar 31, 2018

I bought this for my wife to replace her 10-15 year old Gore Tex jacket hoping it was lighter and more packable. We do a lot of rock climbing now so weight and size are critical unless you want to climb with a 35L pack on. No thanks. Bought it on sale for an awesome price, and it’s turned out to be a great jacket. It’s definately lighter and packs down better than the older technology. And I feel like Marmotbranded items are high quality for a reasonable price. Good job.
