I live in Oregon and have resisted buying puffy coats, I'm pretty cold tolerant and like to make do with layered fleece. Just me, doesn't make sense really.
I've gotten into winter camping lately and decided to give down jackets a go. I tried on many different kinds of expensive jacket you commonly find at REI, giving it time to warm up, and found they're all kind of the same (not counting a few very pricey, delicate items). I actually bought a Patagonia Down Sweater with 800 fill, and was disappointed to find that it's only a little warmer than a fleece sweater.
So I started comparing down fill weights and after some research and tossing/turning settled on this, which has over double the amount of 800 fill of most high-ish end jackets out there. I was a bit apprehensive about buying without trying, but this site has a pretty good return policy.
Well, it turns out I love this thing. It's puffy enough to almost look like much cheaper (and heavier, and colder) primaloft filled jackets; it's very, very warm. Not for in-town use. The fabric is perfect thickness: not so much that it's heavy, but enough that a little snag on some bush won't ruin it.
One online review says it runs way too small. Seems fine on me. I like that it's a tad longer than most coats.
