I bought this set and discovered everything I thought I knew about denatured alcohol camp stoves was wrong. Silly me. Back in the day I, like most people, jumped on the white gas stove bandwagon. Alcohol stoves were looked down on as being old fashioned and such. Now, in my old age, I'm appreciating the reduced volatility of alcohol (not afraid of an accidental spill setting me on fire), the greener aspect (the brand alcohol I use is made from 95% renewable sources) light weight, and dead simple! Fuel, light, cook. No pumping is a fantastic bonus. Silent operation. NO more gas station smell! Boiling water in 5 minutes or so, but that's a liter and half of water.
What sets the Trangia apart to me is the engineering, this is the only stove I've used to have wind protection that is both built in and super effective. Never having to fuss with a separate (usually fragile) wind screen again is worth a heck of a lot. And yes, for me, the stainless steel interior of the pans is worth the extra price from both the health and durability aspects.
Makes me feel like I was missing out all those years dinking around with white gas. Live and learn.
If you can get going on one cup of caffeine beverage, great get a smaller kettle. However, if you are like me and my wife get this one. With nearly a liter and a half capacity we felt in tea and coffee heaven. No Waiting! We could both have big cups of tea or coffee and have plenty left over to make a cup of mint tea for the kid. The only down side is it's a little squeaky getting it into a 25 stove kit, but dink with it for a little while and you'll get the hang of it in no time.
The first Trangia product I ever purchased; the design and strength of this bottle started me on the path to be a Trangia stove owner. If you are using an alcohol stove, go camping with children, pets, or both as I do, this is the only alcohol fuel bottle for you as the lid springs shut when you let go of it, all but eliminating spills. Plus the spout locks shut when you twist down the top. And you can tell if you remembered to lock the top just by looking, when the bottle is locked the white plastic center piece protrudes. Easy peasy. I just returned from a three day jaunt on the coast with 10 yr old daughter and 1 yr old Labrador and I had no worries about either of them being around the fuel to the point I just left the bottle on the camp table all the time. Real peace of mind.
