Kuhl Team 1/4 Zip Sweater OK but not great

Written on Mar 26, 2017

First my measurements... 42R jacket, 16" x 33-34" shirt, and 33-34" waist size. Purchased a medium and it has an athletic-to-trim fit with a little extra room in the midsection. It's an overall nice top and is a bit on the heavier side like most wool garments. However, I imagine it will be warm, not retain odor (wool contribution), and breathable for active pursuits but those seeking something warmer for low activity or idle time, unless used as a midlayer, should look elsewhere. I like it but there are a few shortcomings in my opinion. On the first day of wearing it after shaving my face, I noticed some pilling around the interior collar at the border where it meets the exterior. So I suspect it will end up looking somewhat frayed or unattractive after wearing it multiple times and an extended duration. I don't think it matters if the top is fully or partially zipped as there will most likely be exposed sections either way. They can be shaved but that will weaken the fabric integrity. Anyway, that could have been solved with a fleece collar liner. Second, I love the contrast color of the flatlock seams but don't like the two separate shoulder seams (aesthetically). So I am kind of on the fence with this sweater. In conclusion, it is borderline too expensive considering potential longevity issues.

OK Prana Stretch Zion Convertible Pants for Men

Written on Feb 25, 2016

These pants are just OK in my opinion. They are somewhat slim fitting which I prefer a little baggier pant but to each their own. Anyway, aside from the fit, I don't really care for the pant leg ring formations that are a result of the convertible material and zipper design. They look funny since the material doesn't rest properly in that region but I do like the stretch and overall feel of the pants. Additionally, they seem like they are rugged enough to put some good hiking miles on but time will tell. Anyway, my Campsaver.com transaction experience was great as usual and I will keep the pants but if I had tried them on in a store, I probably would have elected to purchase different pants.

Nice BlueWater Eliminator 10.2mm Standard Rope 60m

Written on Feb 19, 2016

I haven't used this rope much so take this review with a grain of salt... Anyway, I received a defective rope (sheath) and at the time, Campsaver.com didn't have anymore in stock. So rather than bother them, I contacted the manufacturer and they swapped out the rope for me. So I can say that BlueWater backs their products and their customer support is great. The quality of the rope looks good and but time will tell regarding its durability. However, the price was right and my Campsaver.com experiences have all been positive so I pulled the trigger.

Alpha SL Jacket for Men Rocks

Written on Dec 26, 2015

Pleasantly surprised by this jacket as I was worried it might be too thin or not durable. While I have not taken it backpacking or used it for rough applications, I can say that it handles moderate to strong rain and wind very well. I got the riptide color and love it. Unlike the Campsaver.com image that represents an older Alpha SL model, mine only has the single Napoleon chest pocket with a white embroidered Arc'teryx logo. It also has external hood adjustments on the front and rear which work great. About the only negative attribute is a lack of pit zips but this is an SL jacket which means you sacrifice the added weight including extra hand pockets. Anyway, big thumbs up! I wear a medium with most Arc'teryx tops including this one and my measurements are: 180lbs, 42R, Shirt = 16" x 34-35", and waist = 34". Very happy with this Campsaver experience as usual and will continue to do business with them :o)

Arc'teryx Squamish Hoody for Men es bueno

Written on Dec 21, 2015

Arc'teryx really makes excellent outdoors clothing due to the high quality of materials used but also their ergonomic 3d patterning. In other words, the fit is awesome and allows a great range of motion in the all the right spots. Anyway, the Squamish is no exception and while the weather is not conducive to testing it much right now due to my preference of warmer layers during this stage of winter, I have no doubt this jacket delivers like other Arc'teryx clothing. Anyway, I ordered a medium which is typical for their trim, athletic fit. Measurements - 180lbs, 42R, 16x34-35" shirt, 34" waist. Fits like a charm and really like the azul color which is more purple.

Nice Mammut Yukon Trim Long Sleeve Fleece

Written on Dec 16, 2015

I gave this fleece 4 stars due to Campsaver's great sales bargains during the holidays. So I figured I couldn't go wrong with the bang for buck on this one. It's very comfy and soft but I wonder about its durability. It's very basic and will work great as an outer layer during cool weather and a midlayer during cold weather. However, this piece is more loose fitting in the torso than I prefer. I wonder if I might have been better off with a medium vs. the large I purchased. It would have been a gamble since I have the following measurements: 42R, 180lbs., 16" neck, 33-34" sleeves, 34" waist. Anyway, it's not worth full MSRP but if you can score it at a good discount, then enjoy your wooly mammut garment :o)

Very Nice AKU SL Approach GTX Shoe

Written on Dec 11, 2015

The AKU SL Approach GTX shoes run a bit large by probably 1/2 size but that worked out great for me. I wear a 9 1/2 USA size shoe and am at the cusp for width at the D-E range. I was very happy these shoes fit so well even though they required a little bit of a break-in for me. They are stiff but I prefer that and unlike many hiking boots or shoes, you don't have to swap out the insole as it's great too. The craftsmanship and quality of materials used are top notch and since I liked them so much, I ended up ordering another pair, even though I wished Campsaver had other colors in stock. Anyway, thumbs up for these babies and I suspect they will last a long time :o)

Arc'terx Nuclei Hoody is a nice synthetic insulation layer

Written on Aug 22, 2015

The Nuclei Hoody is a nice addition to one's outdoors kit. It's warmth-to-weight ratio, packability, and included compression bag make it fantastic. I also like the fit as usual for Arc'teryx and overall am very happy with it. However, due to its lack of breathability, this is a jacket that I would only wear during colder temps for the most part. It's not as flexible and breathable as its sibling, the Atom LT. I actually give that jacket the edge due to its composite or hybrid design not to mention its superior hood adjustment/design. Anyway, I ordered a medium and am 5'11", 175lbs, have a 16"x34" shirt size, 42R for jacket size, and a 34" waist. Want to stay warm during winter especially during more stationary periods like during the evening at camp, then get a Nuclei Hoody :o)

Excellent Arc'teryx Cerium LT Vest for Men

Written on Aug 19, 2015

Just love the fit and warmth-to-weight ratio of this piece. My dimensions - 5'11", 175-180lbs, 42R, 34" waist and the medium size vest fits perfect. It's a trim fit and due to that, there is no need for a waist hem draw-cord for someone with a similar body type. I think it will be great for an outer layer when it is dry and chilly during the winter. It will also work great as a midlayer too. I got the riptide color and am very happy with it.

Nice lightweight MH Nitrous hooded down jacket

Written on Aug 08, 2015

I wasn't sure what to expect regarding this down jacket when I ordered it. In fact, I was a bit skeptical regarding how it would fit. Upon researching the jacket, people reported that it ran large and so I ordered a medium. I am 5'11", approx. 180 lbs., 42R, and 16" x 33-34" and while I would have liked the jacket to be a little more trim in the torso, I understand clothing manufacturers have to accommodate a range of body types. Basically, it is a bit long and has a little extra room in the midsection but not excessive if you down-size. In fact, this down jacket actually complements my body rather well. Some down jackets are too puffy, make you look like you have a beer belly, and have odd shoulders, etc. However, the MH Nitrous does not have those problems. It's very light and made of high quality materials and overall, I'm very pleased. I can move my hands overhead without the waist hem rising above my pants and there is no restriction whatsoever to your range of motion for any alpine activities. It has a nice hood even though there is no real adjustments and it will only work with a smaller helmet if the jacket is fully zipped up but that's fine with me. Anyhow, it is summer here and I have not truly tested it in cold weather yet but feel it will be great for cool to cold temps. Really cold temps would require layering and since it has a hydrophobic 800 fill down coating, it should work well in the PNW where it can be damp at times. It's one of those comfortable, light ja
