Transitioning from zero drop

Written on Nov 29, 2019

My feet have called Altras home for a long time, the fit and comfort are great. But their persistent weak durability, poor quality control and inconsistency of fit between model upgrades has me looking to transition my feet from zero drop. I have wide feet and wanted an alternative to altra's foot shape. I've been eyeing the free hiker when they were announced before release and I've heard a lot about boost tech. Pulled the trigger on these to get me out of the altra comfort zone and I have no regrets. Boost foam definitely gives an extra spring in my step and all around comfort. The shape isn't too narrow and the stretch upper accommodates my wide feet. Definitely feel there's enough space in the forefoot for toe splay. Tried on a smaller size based on other reviews.....stayed with my normal size as half a size down felt like a tight sock, I prefer some space in the front and accomadation for a thicker sock while hiking. I experienced the foot sliding forward most reviews mention (not really uncomfortable) on descents but I found it could be compensated for by lighter foot work and agility. The extra cushioning (at the Achilles heel) acts as a heel cup and makes the shoe feel more like its one with your foot. Only thing I need to get used to is the 10mm heel drop the shoes have, but that will come with time.
