I was between this Rab and the Patagonia R1. I have an older R1 that is a little too large for use as a mid layer. I love it for a casual jacket. The Rab is lighter weight and not quite as warm. It does work great as a mid layer. I use this over a wool base layer and under a hardshell for skiing. So far the system works great. Since the hood is intended for under helmets, it is pretty tight. Overall the fit is good. I am 5-11, 175 lbs and the large is perfect. I wear a medium in Patagonia for comparison. The chest pocket is pretty big and there are no hand warmer pockets, but the thumb holes on the sleeves are well designed and comfortable.
I love the buckle and the way the belt tightens. It does not loosen on its own. My only disappointment is how the webbing belt deforms after use. It develops a curve in the material at the back that sometimes becomes uncomfortable against my back when I transition from sitting to standing. It almost needs to “settle in” each position.
Based on the description, this was the correct size rain cover for my 50+10 pack, but since it goes up to 90 L, it is huge. Way to big for my pack so I returned it. Material was high quality, just too big.
I purchased this as a mid-layer for downhill skiing and it is great. Since it is a pull over, there is no extra zipper bulk under my shell. It does not have hand pockets, but again, as a mid-layer, I did not want that extra bulk. I can see missing pockets when I use this for a super lightweight jacket while backpacking JMT this summer, but that will be a small sacrifice since the jacket is so light weight. I’m 5-11, 180 lbs and the large fits fine-maybe just a little loose but very comfortable.
