They work pretty well. So I put large coarse slat and whole peppercorns in mine. The reasoning behind this is if your salt and pepper is too fine, ie anything sand like granular will leak out the bottom. This makes a a little mire difficult to grind but less messy. Also the upper aluminum outer casing, that covers the clear plastic container did not seem to want to stay put, a couple dabs of superglue fixed the issue. These are a nice (car/base) camp kitchen addition for sure :-)
