Not the technological marvel I had hoped they would be

Written on Feb 10, 2016

I think these gloves would be pretty good for anybody who doesn't normally suffer from very cold hands. The gloves are decent (lined with Gore-tex) and as good as most even without the heating element. The issue is, I think most people (like me) purchasing an item like this are doing so because they've been frustrated by most everything else on the market. Putting a little electricity behind it seemed like a potential solution.

So my honest assessment is that these gloves work pretty well at reasonable temperatures (20-30F) but only IF you keep them on the highest setting. The problem there is that they run for about 2 hours on that highest setting. My solution was to buy a second pair of batteries ($30) so that I can get maybe 4 to 5 hours out of them. I obviously don't need to keep them on all the time but on a cold day, the only time they are off is when I'm in the lodge eating or resting.

Battery technology just isn't there yet to call these a reasonable solution to people with very cold hands. Even on the highest setting, you better hope it's not a really cold day in the teens or lower. If I place a Little Hottie chemical heat pad on each palm in addition to turning them on the highest setting, I can get through a half-day fairly comfortably. I'll probably end up buying a pair of expedition mittens next season for the colder days. I borrowed a friend's pair a few weeks back and although dexterity goes out the window, at least my hands were pretty warm most of the tim
