Best Training/High Output Cap

Written on Mar 13, 2020

Fit, function, durability are A+, not entirely bad looking either, particularly if you don't mind the prominent branding. Once I get a new one (which is very rarely as they last a LONG time) I immediately take an exacto blade or seam ripper to the embroidered logo. Outstanding product. Ive delayed buying a different style hat for extended coverage of ears and neck because I like these caps so much, so Ive taken to wearing a lightweight capilene hoody over the cap when sun protection is critical.

My New Go-to

Written on Feb 27, 2020

Ive used a variety of socks for training, hiking, and backpacking. My past favorite and go-to sock (from different brand) has now been replaced by these. Granted, I don't have a ton of miles on these but have been wearing them daily in preparation for PCT thru-hike for months now and feel I have enough perspective so as to highly recommend them for above-mentioned activities. I find myself wanting to wear them for casual use too but want to keep them 'fresh' for my hike. I can see myself getting 500+ miles on each pair when compared to other socks Ive used for years with same wool and synthetic %. I wear gaiters for most of the backpacking I do so the available colors don't matter since they're covered, but I wish Darn Tough would offer some lighter colors nonetheless, especially for us desert dwellers.

Outstanding Update - One Fatal Flaw

Written on Jan 17, 2020

I love Lone Peaks. Love Altra shoes. This new version is fatally flawed however. Such a bummer because the updates are truly outstanding. I don't know if it is a design issue, a quality control issue, or both. Its probably both. The seams of the pull-loops at the heel are designed/exeuted in such a way that it laughably, and instantly create stabbing pains. The termination of the seam under the soft lining is hiding a hard projection that is IMMEDIATELY noticeable - and just from walking across the kitchen floor; I didn't even have a chance to take them for a run before I felt the pain. Not discomfort, pain. I thought maybe I had a foxtail or cactus quill in my sock. One shoe is much more noticeable than the other in that this little hard nearly sharp nodule just sticks out into my achilles. Im fortunate, and very happy to say that I almost never have feet issues - even in prolonged challenging, conditions, and I will almost NEVER leave a negative review, but this is such poor execution to what otherwise seems to be such an outstanding update that its just - and there's no other way to say it - sad. Sorry Altra. I love you but dang. (I took pictures but couldn't find a way to upload them.)

Bulletproof?

Written on Jan 11, 2020

Outstanding. Been looking at trying these for awhile for long-distance hiking. Used a popular cycling sock for this with the same wool percentage but for upcoming thru-hike thought to try these as Ive used other darn toughs for just about everything else. Ive only been training in them, and kicking around casually, but there's no reason to think these won't be perfect for big adventures. Perfect thickness, good wicking/moisture control. Curious if Darn Tough will consider making them in lighter colors.

Nice Pants...

...but I can't wear them. Well made, light, functional. Wanted a pair for a long time. Easily a great choice for others who may be a slim build. Waist and inseam are perfect but theyre not large enough in the thighs. Restrictive. A size larger for me would be sloppy in the waist so unfortunately I have to return them.

Solid

Traditional, functional, aesthetically sound. Did I mention it is extremely comfortable? Man do I like the Lowa line - casual or technical. A bit pricey but you know the cliche: You get what you pay for.
