Three Aces: Style, Fit, and Weight

Written on Aug 04, 2017

In line with my other Arc’teryx garments, this jacket checks all the blocks: Design that both stylish and functional, tailored fit, flawless workmanship, and it’s lightweight. What else could a person need or want?

Happy marriage of tradition and technology.

This ‘Asylum’ shirt has all the obvious virtues of a warm plaid shirt, with a weave that includes a “thermal lining”. Not that I’m a lumberjack or anything, but the athletic cut allows room for my shoulders. Waiting now for cold weather.

Although I bought my usual size, these are a bit large and I must wear them with socks, but that is okay. They are light yet have a nice grippy sole so the traction is perfect.

I’ve skied alpine and xc most of my adult life, and have had occasion to endure some tough conditions. Without being a complete slave to fashion, I’ve used some of the most functional and durable clothing available. These “Response Pants” from Salomon are winners on both fronts: style and warmth. Venting on the inside of the thighs that actually works, pockets that are convenient and protected from snow or rain. Bring it on!

The Marmot Leadville Jacket answers my bells. I’m old enough to have owned and used many, many jackets, in diverse settings; for xc skiing in moderate temperatures, this one is fantastic: blocks wind in front, breathes out the back. Another thing I’ve always liked about Marmot is the sizing: an XL is an American XL. I’m happy.
