Apologies to anyone who read my prior review on this item. Although much of it was accurate to the best of my knowledge, there was one part that needs updating. It's quite possible that I was NOT tightening the pump handle prior to lighting the lantern, and this may have accounted for my beginner's difficulty in keeping it lit and stable. The other things were all true, e.g. about the shrill sound it makes at low light settings. I actually have a Northstar Propane lantern with the single tube mantle that does the exact same thing! Only that one lights easier :-).
The lantern is well made, but that’s the only good thing I can say about it. Working with a liquid fuel lantern is not for everyone. If you’re used to a propane lantern, it will be a real chore to pump regularly, have the enclosure become engulfed in flames until the pressure builds up enough to burn the fuel vapor as it should, and have to clean the soot off the lantern parts, especially the globe, which gets covered in black soot while igniting the lantern. Also, it is not as adjustable as the three propane lanterns I have used. At low light settings, this lantern makes a shrill, obnoxious drone that will have fellow campers throwing tomatoes at you! It’s really loud at low light settings, and if you go too low it just goes out and then starts flaming intermittently. If you think there is nothing better than this, then go for it, but I recommend using a propane lantern. To me it’s more than worth the slightly higher cost the fuel. Also, you don’t have to mess around with funnels, getting fuel all over your hands and the can, carrying a can of liquid fuel, etc.). Buy only for academic purposes, not for practicality!
