Learning to Fly

Written on May 01, 2020

This is my first pair of Hoka shoes and so far, so good. After all the enthusiastic reviews I decided to give them a try in a size 12 wide. I have a pretty flat wide foot but have not historically ordered a wide shoe. Coming from Saucony Peregrine ISO and Brooks Caldera 3 (both 12.5 medium width) I am glad I did. Length and width were perfect if not still a little pinched on my little toe due to the narrowish toe box. It took a couple of runs to feel “right” (Huge midsole and bigger drop than I’m used to) but I think I am acclimatized to them now. These have a great aggressive outsole and provide excellent traction. Up or down on dry rocky NorCal hills or on loose over hard dirt roads, these felt instantly secure. The extra- plush (but firm) ride is odd at first (for me as a newbie to Hokas) but I learned to appreciate it on my 1000ft+ decent back to the trail head. I think these will certainly be in the mix for my longer and more technical runs and while not light per se, they do not feel as sluggish as they look.
