Good bag but with a major limitation

Purchased the bag in Nov 23 but was able to use it only now for my Everest 3 passes trek. This is my 3rd Deuter bag (Aircontact 45 and Aircontact 55+10) and the major reason for purchasing this was the weight. Compared to the Aircontact 55+10, the Aircontact Ultra 50+5 weighs almost half as much (1.35kg vs 2.65kg) and the difference is clearly felt. Deuter has done a great job reducing the weight while keeping the functionality largely intact - still has plenty of external pockets for water as well and the top cover zip, and I really didn’t miss the full functionality of the Aircontact 55+10. The one major drawback though was that when I loaded the Ultra beyond 7 kgs, the bag started biting significantly into my lower back and it started to create huge discomfort. I checked the weight distribution structure on the Ultra and it seems to rely on a rather thin wire that goes around the entire back and lower edge of the backpack. This may be causing the stress to increase on the lower edge of the bag, that sits on the lower back/ glutes. On the Aircontact 55+10, I carried 12 kg for the Manaslu circuit and i didnt feel a thing. Overall, if you can limit the weight to under 7kg (incl water), I would strongly suggest the Ultra. However, if you need to carry more weight, you are much better off with the Aircontact series.
Pros:
  • Light weight
  • functional
  • Great color
Cons:
  • Max load 7-8kg
Best Used for:
