It's a good mat. - Exped SynMat Duo Sleeping Pad

rikjohnson's Review of Exped SynMat Duo Sleeping Pad
INITIAL THOUGHTS
I originally ordered from Campmore the Exped Simcomfort duo 7.5 but there was some problem with getting it from the maker so Campmore offered the Synmat Duo as a replacement at a decent deal. I likes their keeping me informed of the shipping and their willingness towork with me to fix a problem. Excellent Customer Service!!
I was hesitant to switch as the Synmat was thinner and the shape was funny but finally agreed as I am leading a kayak trip down the Colorado River in November so time was short and getting shorter. After reading the reviews and comparing stats, and with 2 weeks to the trip, I agreed.
The mat arrived in less tan a week as I was doing a pre-trip test-pack of the kayaks and I found that it packed up much smaller than the Simcomfort which is a big plus in a kayak where size matters over weight.
After the rest of the trip people left, I set my new Marmot Tungston-2 tent in the living room and set the Synmat inside AFTER blowing it up.
First of all, that Schnozzle inflating bag is WONDERFUL!!! At my age, blowing up any airbed is a chore but the Schnozzel made the work simple and fast. The secret is to pretend that you are opening a pillowcase prior to stuffing the pillow in. THAT technique fills the bag. Less than a half-dozen fills, one side was full to hard! Move the schnozzle to the other side and fill the other side. ***** stars and I wish I could give 10!
Next I simply rolled the mat into a tube and slid it through the door of the tent. Easy to do as I was not certain that I could inflate it INside the tent. The long tubes allowed me to roll the pad and slip it in easily.
The Synmat filed the tent side-to-side though there was maybe 8" of tent at the foot that was not covered. No problem, that is where I store my gear. ***** Another 5-stars here.
The shape turned out to be no problem at all. The narrow foot and the head corners were sacrificed to save weight and I never noticed their loss.
Next was testing. I had my tentmate lay next to me and she was comfortable with the pressure though my side was a bit hard for me. So I reached up and let a second or two air out to get my side soft while her side remained firm. ***** Another 5-stars for this idea.
I did note that during the amorous test, she found that moving around from hard to soft sides to be disconcerting but that is easily solved. I simply will fill both sides hard, then when done and we are ready for sleep, I deflate my side a bit. So for the naughtier bits, the mattress was very comfortable though a bit noisy. No problem as I always put a close-cell foam pad beneath my airpads to protect in case of a missed stick or rock under the tent and that will remove the noise. Plus I always carry a sheet to put over the air-pad as washing a sheet after a trip is easier than washing an airpad or sleeping bag. **** Five stars for the comfort, 1 for the noise = four stars.
Next was the main complaint for dual airpads. My dog insists on being walked at 6am. My tentmate likes to sleep in. When I get up, the airpad softens and she hits the ground. With the dual chamber, I got up and she never noticed! Similar for my 2am pee break where she would sink when I got up and pop off as I got back in. ***** Another five stars and I would give it a ten if I could,
Next comes the deflate part. Having used Thermarest airpads which I LOVE (I would marry my thermarest self inflating pad if I could), I am accustomed to a lot of hard work deflating and repacking any pad. Here I popped both deflate valves and within seconds the mat was flat.
I had watched the YouTube vid and followed instructions: fold the mat in 4ths, roll, then unroll and roll tight. The one-way valves worked wonderfully. My second roll made the mat smaller than it was from the factory!
This was the easiest mat I ever had that inflated and deflated so easily! ***** Five stars for this and only because I could not give it ten.
Suggestions to the reader.
You are buying the SynMat Duo because you are going with a partner. A partner with whom you intend to be amorous! This is the perfect bed for that. So here is what you do! Blow both sides up to desired and equal hardness for the fun. Then let air out one side for the softer partner's comfort after the fun-times.
Get a sheet to go over to keep it clean and a pad under to a) keep the noise down and b) prevent accidental punctures.
Watch the Exped YouTube video to see all the functions of the bed and exactly how to in/deflate the pad! You will save a LOT of trouble if you do!
I gave it 4-stars as I only tested it in my living room.
Next week I am doing a week down the Colorado River so will give the field results when I get back.
