40L is a good size for carry-on travel, and very high quality.
The 30L is nice, but a tad too small. So I ended up returning the 30 and got the 40. Although on paper the Transit 40 exceeds the carry-on dimension, but the bag is soft, and if you don't stuff the pack to its max, it can easily be squeeze into the bin.
What I'm saying is it can hold more than a hard suitcase because there is no roller & rails eating up the 22x14x9 volume, and yet only weight 4.5lb ultra-lightweight, a 7lb lightweight hard cases. Now you see both are heavier and can hold less.
This Exped is a minimal, simple, and yet well-constructed pack. It has more structure, but not as bulkly & padded like other duffel/backpack. That's why I chose this over the others.

overall a great choice
lightweight, secure and not overly built. my only major drawback is that when you set it down, the backpack straps get dirty on the ground
