Walter Bates's Review of Garmin Fenix 7X Pro Sapphire Solar Edition Watch

Gave my Apple Watch to my grandson. First Garmin watch. Used to support my backpacking endeavors. Accuracy tested relatively well with respect to my Garmin 67i handheld. Nice selectable red or white light with multi illumination level flashlight very useful. Use both the standard and off trail alarms & at home, hiking and walking profiles. Multi satellite GPS and compass map is very useful and as easy to read as lifting your hand. Watch supports Bluetooth for receiving texts but does not support hands free phone. 28 days of battery life possible but this is somewhat reduced when heart rate, oxygen sensors continuously set to continuously on (24 days). Altitude, barometric pressure, compass heading also very useful especially with third party watch face via Garmin Connect IQ. Multi Sat and oxy sensor mode on does consume battery life but worst case (for me has been 14 - 18 days) + compass using the 3rd party watch face that displays all active sensor data. I enjoy this watch very much and will not be returning.
Pros:
  • Flahlight
  • Compass
  • Customizable activity profiles - hike walk fish etc
Cons:
  • None

About Walter Bates from TX, United States

Senior hiker. Retired, kiddos raised, my wife of 46yrs busy enjoying home-life with her aging parents and our grandkids on our property compound. At this time in my life, my mind and love of the outdoors is calling. Before marriage, I hiked for months at a time out west. Grand Canyon, Kings Canyon, Big Sur, Yosemite with an 1gal water jug, AA flashlight, sleeping bag, svea stove, fuel bottle, plastic sheet but no tent. Recently, I have spent some money with Campsaver upgrading my gear and tested it (and myself) hiking several trails within Glacier National Park to see if I still was able and enjoyed the hike. WOW, I do. Met a guy (now friend) at REI and we are planning to SOBO thru-hike the JMT in 2024. Heading off to Big Bend next month for more gear shakeout testing and to enjoy the area in cooler temps. I look forward to our paths crossing on the trail!
