In My Own Words:

Senior hiker. Retired, kiddos raised, my wife of 46yrs busy enjoying home-life with her aging parents and our grandkids on our property compound. At this time in my life, my mind and love of the outdoors is calling.

Before marriage, I hiked for months at a time out west. Grand Canyon, Kings Canyon, Big Sur, Yosemite with an 1gal water jug, AA flashlight, sleeping bag, svea stove, fuel bottle, plastic sheet but no tent. Recently, I have spent some money with Campsaver upgrading my gear and tested it (and myself) hiking several trails within Glacier National Park to see if I still was able and enjoyed the hike. WOW, I do. Met a guy (now friend) at REI and we are planning to SOBO thru-hike the JMT in 2024. Heading off to Big Bend next month for more gear shakeout testing and to enjoy the area in cooler temps. I look forward to our paths crossing on the trail!

Great Solo Cook Kit from MSR

Written on Jun 22, 2024

Bought this a year ago and it is my go to cook kit when backpacking in expected windy conditions or in the mountains. At just under one pound (excluding fuel canister) I have found it to be light, fuel efficient and compact thus easier to carry, use and pack on longer backpacking trips (150 miles not 2000 mile thru hikes). Having all the pieces contained within the pot helps me keep track of all the pieces (no more hunting around in my pack). Pressure regulator helps keep the flame well controlled at elevation and colder temps. Not sure why some folks have issues with the thermocouple shut off protection as it is resettable (as explained in manual) and I personally like and respect the MSR engineering behind this product. I also like MSR products because I can get parts should I ever need them in the future (made to last not throwaway). * I also purchased a collapsible sea to summit X Cup 8.3floz cup which fits over the stove canister fitting but inside the pot, protecting both the fitting and pot while providing a nice cup for hot drinks. My only con is that I enjoy several cups of hot chocolate or coffee with my dehydrated meals and thus am looking at the larger 1.8 liter duo which is designed for two but in my case would allow more drinks.

Great Watch for Hikers

Written on Oct 07, 2023

Gave my Apple Watch to my grandson. First Garmin watch. Used to support my backpacking endeavors. Accuracy tested relatively well with respect to my Garmin 67i handheld. Nice selectable red or white light with multi illumination level flashlight very useful. Use both the standard and off trail alarms & at home, hiking and walking profiles. Multi satellite GPS and compass map is very useful and as easy to read as lifting your hand. Watch supports Bluetooth for receiving texts but does not support hands free phone. 28 days of battery life possible but this is somewhat reduced when heart rate, oxygen sensors continuously set to continuously on (24 days). Altitude, barometric pressure, compass heading also very useful especially with third party watch face via Garmin Connect IQ. Multi Sat and oxy sensor mode on does consume battery life but worst case (for me has been 14 - 18 days) + compass using the 3rd party watch face that displays all active sensor data. I enjoy this watch very much and will not be returning.

Extremely High Quality, Light and Comfy

Written on Sep 20, 2023

Feather light, warm and comfortable. 6ft 200lbs side sleeper and roomy enough for me as a bag, quilt or bag overlay. I currently have and use the WM Antelope (5 deg), WM Badger (15deg), WM Megalite (32deg) and this Everlite I use the Everlite by itself or as an overbag for my other WM bags. Because WM bags are so warm I rarely use the Badger or Antelop. My go to’s: Everlite to Megalite. I would definitely buy again.

Still have my dependable 48 yr old SVEA 123 stove

Written on Sep 18, 2023

I would upload photos if permitted. Great stove that takes a beating but ALWAYS WORKS. I just weighed my stove. Empty of fuel it weighs 14.65 oz. Nice thing about this stove is dependability without annual maintenance (at least in my case). Did I mentioned I have had this stove for 48yrs. My first stove.

Best Backpacking Hat

Written on Sep 01, 2023

Just purchased my second one. Lightweight, collapsible, great rain and sun protection. Perfect length chinstrap for high winds or hanging off my backpack. Previous response and product description says these hats are water resistant not waterproof but I have been in several days of rainy weather with zero issues. My head and the fabric has always been dry underneath. OR does sell a GORETEX (waterproof) version of this hat for $10 more but personally I have never had a issue.
