Been great to use! The extra filter advertised was the one that just comes with it. So really it is just one full unit. But I have taken this and used it extensively in Mexico, many downtown cities, Canada, and the Philippines. Used in streams, lakes, and fountains(not a proud moment being seen scooping water out of a fountain) Easy to use, assemble, field clean, and most of all I trust it!

Initial impression

by Jescina, Verified Owner from WA, United States Written on September 25, 2018
I bought this for an upcoming trip to Asia (Nepal, Bhutan and Thailand). I have tested it out on my tap water and local stream but nothing really dirty yet. My first impression is thatthe materials and design is quality. I have no problems initiating the force needed to purify/filter the water. The only drawback as others have noted is the limited volume of drinking water it produces. It would be nice to see this made with about 8 more ounces capacity.

Nice water filter

by Y L., Verified Owner from CA, United States Written on September 18, 2018
I've been using the sawyer water filters for the last few years and it was always a little awkward and took some time to fill up water. I like how this can purify water a bit quicker because you press down on it. This would've been perfect for my last trip to mammoth lakes where it was pretty slow to fill my bladders and to filter some extra water for cooking. Only used it on a couple trips, but working pretty great so far. Also going to bring it along for a South America trip this December so hopefully it saves me from having to buy a lot of bottled water.

I'd bring an extra container or bottle so you can save up more clean water if you tend to drink a lot of water like me. The size of the filter bottle by itself isn't usually enough for me.
Pros:
  • Easy and fast
Cons:
  • Smallish
Best Used for:
  • travel
  • backpack camping

Functional

by daha, from WI, United States Written on November 13, 2017
Background: +40 years user of manufactured to diy water filtering/purification systems for backpacking, sea kayak camping, touring foreign lands and now small sail boat camping.

Have yet to use this unit in a real world setting. It’s “winter” up here. Just kitchen tested. Purchased this unit for day boating and boat camping. L. Superior provides an almost unlimited accessible source of fresh water. Just not as “pure” as it looks. Old age or fully developed frontal lobe. Bit more concerned with the quality of H2O consumed. Preference for a purifier over a filter.

Big +s for this purifier are:
1. It is a purifier vs. filter only.
2. Relatively inexpensive.
3. Human powered vs. battery/solar powered purifier.
4. Simple design = less parts to break, easy to service, no fuss use.

Limits:
1. Thing is bit on the heavy side. Not my choice for backpacking. Not a gram counting, minimalist. More of a weight conscious hiker.
2. Limited capacity per purifying cycle.
3. Limited number of exposures to freezing. Like most filters a cold weather sleeping companion.
4. Limited shelf life after initial use (3 years). 10 year shelf life.
5. Limited capacity before purifier cartridge needs replacement (150L).

For the intended personal use this unit should be functional. Sailboat is a micro-cruiser. Storage space is limited. This filter will serve double use as the water bottle and purifier. Back up will be the diy gravity filter and chlorine dioxide tablets.

Haven't had the opportunity to is this yet, but just upon inspection it looks the real deal. Was advertised as extra filter included, but did not arrive with that packaging.

Worth every penny. I used it for a long day hike. Carried 1 small bottle of water and the grayl. Perfect and necessary to help lighten the weight. Water tasted very clean and I didn't get sick.
