Background: +40 years user of manufactured to diy water filtering/purification systems for backpacking, sea kayak camping, touring foreign lands and now small sail boat camping.
Have yet to use this unit in a real world setting. It’s “winter” up here. Just kitchen tested. Purchased this unit for day boating and boat camping. L. Superior provides an almost unlimited accessible source of fresh water. Just not as “pure” as it looks. Old age or fully developed frontal lobe. Bit more concerned with the quality of H2O consumed. Preference for a purifier over a filter.
Big +s for this purifier are:
1. It is a purifier vs. filter only.
2. Relatively inexpensive.
3. Human powered vs. battery/solar powered purifier.
4. Simple design = less parts to break, easy to service, no fuss use.
Limits:
1. Thing is bit on the heavy side. Not my choice for backpacking. Not a gram counting, minimalist. More of a weight conscious hiker.
2. Limited capacity per purifying cycle.
3. Limited number of exposures to freezing. Like most filters a cold weather sleeping companion.
4. Limited shelf life after initial use (3 years). 10 year shelf life.
5. Limited capacity before purifier cartridge needs replacement (150L).
For the intended personal use this unit should be functional. Sailboat is a micro-cruiser. Storage space is limited. This filter will serve double use as the water bottle and purifier. Back up will be the diy gravity filter and chlorine dioxide tablets.
